Chris Hughton says Albion cannot use Dale Stephens’ absence as an excuse for defeat at Preston.

The midfielder, who usually loves trips back to his native North West, pulled out of the match with illness.

Albion, also missing suspended Lewis Dunk and injured Gaetan Bong, went down 2-0 at Deepdale.

Asked if Stephens’ absence was a major factor in the result, Hughton said: “It’s a factor. But we have a very competitive squad so I make no excuses for that.

“Whatever team we put out, it’s a strong enough team to compete and give ourselves a chance of winning.

“We just weren’t good enough today.

“Dale went down ill yesterday. He has been very consistent in his performances but we have good competition in most areas, and certainly in central midfield.

“We can’t make that an excuse. I think they were missing a couple of players.”

Preston were without their two first-choice central midfielders in suspended Ben Pearson and the unwell Daniel Johnson as well as back-up John Welsh, who is injured.

Bong and potential replacement Sebastian Pocognoli were both ruled out for Albion, meaning a league debut for Sam Adekugbe.

That situation could change by the time Sheffield Wednesday visit the Amex on Friday.

Hughton said of Bong’s surprise absence: “It was a little issue with his knee.

“We are hoping he and Seb will both be available come Friday.”
