Albion are sweating on a medical verdict on second-choice goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa’s shoulder injury.

The Finn had a scan last night on the left shoulder he hurt in Saturday’s FA Cup exit at Lincoln City.

The Seagulls receive the results today, which will determine their next course of action.

If Maenpaa’s lay-off is brief they will leave things as they are. Alternatively, they will sign an experienced replacement as cover for No.1 David Stockdale before the transfer window shuts tonight, or recall Christian Walton from his season-long loan at Luton Town.

They are weighing up whether it would be best to cut short England under-21 Walton’s spell at Kenilworth Road, where he is playing regularly and performing well under ex-Albion assistant Nathan Jones, or bring another new face into the close-knit group.

Meanwhile, Liam Rosenior has suffered a setback in his recovery from an ankle fracture and ligament damage.

The 32-year-old utility player is back on crutches following a niggle in training, which is not thought to be serious.

Rosenior has made three appearances in the Checkatrade Trophy and under-23s, the latest 90 minutes against Nottingham Forest last week. He was injured in a tackle by Yann Kermorgant in the closing stages of the draw at Reading in August.
