Another Eubank will leap into the ring this month aiming to live up to the famous name.

Anyone who follows boxing – and many who don’t – know about former world champion Chris Eubank.

His son Chris junior is now carving his own place in the sport’s elite after claiming the IBO world super-middleweight title in February.

Now Harlem Eubank – cousin of Chris junior – is ready to make a name for himself in his own right.

Harlem will make his professional debut at the Metropole Hotel, Brighton, on May 27 on a show promoted by Scott Welch.

The 23-year-old says carrying the Eubank name brings out the best in him as he joins the paid ranks as a light welterweight after a solid amateur career of 33 bouts and 21 wins including Box Cup success.

Harlem, whose father Simon had 27 fights as a professional, told The Argus: “Having the name has always put more pressure on from the beginning.

“Everyone wants to fight the hardest against you and everyone wants to beat you which just makes every fight tougher. That is a good thing, though, because you get the best of every opponent so it is improving your game.

“The amateurs has never really suited my style. I’ve just been jumping in at the deep end and learning every fight but the pros is always what I had in the back of my head from the very beginning. My style has adapted since then.

“All of the fights I’ve had have been at a competitive level as I’ve entered all the big competitions and I’d say 60% of the losses could have gone either way.”

Harlem trains alongside his cousin at the Pro-Am Gym in Brighton with Ronnie Davies.

And just like Chris Jr, who boldly claimed he wanted world glory when he turned professional, Harlem is aiming high.

He said: “I have no other goals than to get to the top of boxing.

“There will be short-term goals in between that but my eyes are on reaching the top so I shall be training and fighting until I get there.”

His cousin’s success has also shown those dreams are achievable.

Harlem said: “I do a lot of training with Chris and he has provided the path in real-time and how it can be done and what it takes to do it.

“I have been watching his training, training with him and taking on that work-rate and that mentality as well.”

Eubank Jr polarises opinion just like his father, with his perceived arrogance making him a love-hate figure. Harlem appears less likely to become a controversial character but his easy-going persona is just for outside the ring.

He said: “I’m my own person and I wouldn’t say I am necessarily like anyone else. We all have our different traits and the way we approach things but what I can take from Chris is the work-rate, the way he approaches training and also the fact he is cold in the ring.

“Outside of the ring it’s different but in the ring it’s combat – it’s life or death – so in the ring you have to be cold.”

Eubank Jr had to persuade his father to allow him to box in the early days but Harlem had no such problems with his dad.

Harlem said: “Combat is something I always wanted to do. When I was seven I walked into a karate gymnasium and I was a fighter for four years and won two British titles consecutively, so it was always in my DNA to want to fight.

“When I found boxing it gave me a new route and new challenges – which is why I am here.

“I’ve tasted success and boxing is the hardest thing I’ve done, which is why I wanted to do it as I want to test myself even more.”

Just like a fighting cousin, Harlem is a ferocious trainer although you will not find him fuelling up on steaks as he is a vegetarian.

He said: “Everything in my lifestyle is directed towards training or around training and everything is done to further my boxing. My body runs best on plant-based food so I am plant-based in terms of nutrition.”
