Pascal Gross said he never stopped believing Albion would make a breakthrough.

But he felt luck was on his side when he fired the goal which gave the Seagulls a 1-0 win at home to Watford.

Albion were heading towards a seventh game without a goal from open play when Gross drilled his 64th-minute effort under the body of Watford keeper Heurelho Gomes.

The hosts had already seen chances come and go – and they missed three more before the points were secure.

Gross said of his goal: “I always believed in our strength and quality.

“We played very well and I thought at some time it would go in.

“The trouble comes when you think it is like last week (the 0-0 draw with Burnley).

“You start thinking about it and that is the worst thing you can do.

“That was what we said at half-time.

“I always think I can score or make an assist in every part of the game because we are a good team.

“We have players who can score or make assists so why shouldn’t we believe? Why should we stop trying?”

Gross was Albion’s drought-breaker for the second time this season.

He also ended what was a wait of almost three-and-a-half games for the team to get off the mark in the top flight when he netted in the win over West Brom.

The German playmaker relived the moment he broke the deadlock in front of the North Stand.

He said: “I got the ball from Tomer and I knew what I wanted to do.

“I wanted to chop it on my left foot and get it on my right foot because the angle wasn’t so good with my left.

“I tried to create some space for myself and I hit it and was a little bit lucky.”
