PETER WARD wants to see Glenn Murray level the scores tonight – by hitting the winner against Manchester United.

The Albion legend will be at the Amex hoping to see the Seagulls secure Premier League safety.

And Ward would love to see Murray match his tally of 95 goals for the club in all competitions.

Murray is currently one behind having struck 14 times this season.

Both Ward and Murray grew up as Manchester United fans.

But Ward said: “I want Brighton to win tonight – 1-0, Murray would do me.”

Albion have only ever beaten United once in 15 attempts and Ward was the scorer in the 1-0 success at the Goldstone in 1982-83.

He said: “Remember it? Of course I remember it! It was a great goal!

“Gerry Ryan played the ball in, Robbo (Michael Robinson) headed it towards me and I just relaxed, chested it down and volleyed it in, right in front of the North Stand.

“Growing up, my dad took me to Old Trafford and my heroes were Denis Law, George Best and Bobby Charlton.

“But I hope Brighton win tonight.

“I’m hoping for the three points that keep us up.”

Ward flew over from his home in Tampa, Florida, for the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford in November.

He said: “I’ve seen almost every Brighton game this season on TV and I think they have done great.

“Glenn Murray has done really well.

“He is not the quickest but he produces some great moments with Pascal Gross.

Chris Hughton has done a great job and we deserve to stay in the Premier League.”

Murray this week told The Argus how he developed his love for football watching Eric Cantona and United in the 1990s.

Ward insists he would not have been the success he was for Albion in the 1970s without learning about the game watching United’s attacking stars.

But he almost went one better by signing for them.

He said: “Watching Law, Best and Charlton, especially Georgie Best, made me want to be the player I was at Brighton.

“Dave Sexton tried to sign me for United when he went there as manager.

“He had been my coach with England under-21s.

“I don’t know why it didn’t happen to be honest. It would have been nice.”
