Harry Finch and Ben Brown dug Sussex out of a hole on the opening day of the Specsavers County Championship match with Gloucestershire at Cheltenham.
After an aggressive half-century from opener Phil Salt, the visitors slumped to 97-4, having won the toss, as Craig Miles struck three times in quick succession during the morning session.
Finch and Brown then added 113 either side of lunch before Brown, on 59, became a maiden first class wicket for 19-year-old Gloucestershire off-spinner George Drissell, lofting a catch to mid-off.
David Weiss then fell lbw to Keiran Noema-Barnett, shouldering arms, and at tea Sussex were 219-6, with Finch unbeaten on 65. Miles had figures of 3-55 and Noema-Barnett 2-34.
