England head coach Eddie Jones has challenged Marcus Smith and the other 11 new caps to earn the right to be selected again.

The former Brighton college and Rugby Club star made his test debut for England yesterday in their 43-29 win over the USA at Twickenham.

Smith, contributed 13 of those points scoring a try and four conversions.

The Argus:

It caps off what has been a good couple of weeks for the 22-year-old half-back, after he won the Premiership title with Harlequins at Twickenham the weekend before last.

But Jones has now challenged Smith and the other 11 new caps to earn the right to be selected again.

He said: “It was a historic occasion, with 12 new caps for England, 10,000 people back in Twickenham, and a few of the players could see their families while they were singing the national anthem.

“So it was a great day for the sport.

“The first half, we were very good, we put ourselves in the position to win the game, which is the most important thing first of all.

“Then in the second half we got a bit loose, a bit inconsistent and dropped off in a number of areas.

“A lot of new players have had a taste of Test rugby now, and now it’s about how hard they want to work to keep improving.”
