Sussex lost their 50-overs opener – and saw “distraught” Steven Finn suffer another injury setback.
The fast bowler returned after a year out with a major knee issue but then suffered a back injury early in his spell.
He did not complete his allotted overs and was absent when Sussex batted.
Sharks lost by 132 runs after Durham piled up 427-9 at Hove.
Finn will have a scan on Monday.
Head coach Paul Farbrace said: “Because he is so desperate to do well for the team, he stayed on the field and that definitely affected his bowling.
“We have all seen how much effort, how much time, how much commitment and how professional he has been to get back to that stage, “To see him distraught that he couldn’t finish the game puts winning and losing into perspective.”
Farbrace added: “This is far from the start we wanted in this competition but Durham played some wonderful cricket.”
