Albion under-21s were denied a late winner at Manchester United – on an up-and-down evening for Ruairi McConville.

The Seagulls came from behind to draw 1-1 at Leigh Sports Village in Premier League 2.

Thy thought they had a late winner from Odel Offiah, only for referee Anthony Taylor to rule Louis Flower had fouled goalkeeper Dermot Mee.

McConville, an 18-year-old defender from Belfast, scored for both teams.

The former Linfield player cancelled out his first-half own goal when he crashed the ball home on 72 minutes.

McConville’s own goal saw him stretch in an attempt to cut out a low cross and only succeed in diverting the ball into the net as Tom McGill dived looking to cut the ball out.

The equaliser came when McConville soared to meet a corner with a header which was blocked by a defender right in front of goal.

The rebound sat up nicely for the Albion man to hook home a shot with his right foot.

Mee ensured a point for the home team with a double save from Flower after he had been sent through the back-line by Ifill’s superb through ball.

Kami Doyle then saw his follow-up blocked by a defender.

Albion: McGill; Offiah, McConville, Jackson (Kavanagh 65), Nilsson (Flower 65); Doyle, Mullins; Slater, Barrington, Vickers (Ifill 64); Duffus. Unused subs: Fisher, Albarus.
