Mick Salsbury was so excited about England winning the World Cup in 1966, he and some mates set up a parks team in Hove.

Almost 60 years later he is still going strong and has set a new goalscoring record – at the age of 73.

The BN Dons player netted in an end-of-season win for his title-winning team in the Sussex Sunday League.

He has been confirmed as the oldest scorer ever in Sunday League football in this country.

Mick scored from close range in a 10-2 win over Btown FC at Culver Road.

He still runs the line on a regular basis for both BN Dons and Combination League outfit Rottingdean Village and is always willing to help out in any way he can.

But, having played as a defender or midfielder through the decades, he relished being give a run-out up front and the chance to get on the scoresheet.

He told The Argus: “I’ve always played local parks football.

“Enthusiasm has always been my biggest asset!

“The World Cup win turned me even more on to the game and we set up a team, Hove Youth Club.

“I played two games a week until I was 60 but then packed up Saturdays.

“I stopped playing regularly when I was 65 and I started running the line.”

Mick played for English’s and Stanley OBs down the years.

He said: “I keep myself fit. I go to the gym most days and do bits and pieces.

“I’m too old to play regularly now – BN Dons are too good - but I will keep running the line all the time I enjoy it.

“You get a few comments sometimes but I’m a bit deaf!”

Despite the age gap, Mick gets on well with the BN Dons boys.

He added: “They are a really good bunch.”

Dons boss Jack Green said the goal was no gimme – and that Mick looked the part in the heat of battle.

Jack said: “Mick played with my dad back in the day and he helps out with a lot of Saturday and Sunday sides.

“The league was wrapped up so I put him on and he looked quite sharp.

“He scored off his own bat, not with any help, and it was nice to see.”

BN Dons signed Mick earlier this season and teased the news via social media, tweeting: “Big, big deal, some well-needed experience to see us through the business end of the season.”
