Steve Evans has been given the go-ahead to strengthen his squad in the loan market.

But the Crawley boss is in no mood to spend the club’s money.

Evans was hoping to tie up a loan for a wide player before taking his Blue Square premier leaders to Burton Albion today but the deal has fallen through.

He is looking to cover the absence of Lewis Killeen, who has missed the last three games with an ankle injury and is out for another fortnight.

Evans said: “I don’t think any deal is going to happen because the manager of the club concerned wants to get players in first. Things might change after today but I’m not taking a scattergun approach to bringing players in.”

Evans was told there was no money available last month when he tried to sign two players on loan but co-owner Phil Jarman and chairman Vic Marley have confirmed that they will personally finance any new deal.

“The board are very regimented in terms of what is available to strengthen the squad,” added Evans.

“As a manager, you will always identify players who might be better than what you have got.

“I tried to get a couple of loan players in a fortnight ago but the board said no but with Lewis Killeen out for another two weeks more than we thought they came straight back and said we could look again.

“We have a fantastic squad and an unbelievable team spirit and my job is to make sure that we don’t bring someone in who is going to upset the harmony.

“We check out the character every player we signed. There are lads in our dressing room who will have played with him or know somebody who knows him and you will be amazed at the feedback you get.”

Reds have failed in a bid to sign Michael Malcolm on loan from Blue Square premier rivals Weymouth.

Malcolm, who played against Crawley in the 2-2 draw last week, was one of five players put on the transfer list by Weymouth recently.

Evans said: “His name was among those circulated on a list, but nothing has come of it.”
