BRIAN DENNIS insists he will not get carried away after his Eastbourne United side went top of the division one table.

Brad Manton scored twice as United beat Worthing United 4-0 to climb above Ringmer at the summit.

But boss Dennis was not happy with all aspects of Saturday’s performance.

He said: “In the first half we were lazy and didn’t work hard enough.

“They got a rollicking at half-time and they performed really well in the second half.

“It’s fantastic to be top but we are not getting carried away, we are not even halfway through the season yet. We must just keep doing what we are doing.”

Steve Morris and Lucas Mann also netted with all the goals coming in the second half.

Ringmer went down 2-1 away to Redhill, who are managed by their former boss John Crumplin.

Tony Reid’s first-half opener was cancelled out by Ryan MacMillan’s penalty on the hour mark but substitute Tom Brown headed a winner from Lee Radford’s cross five minutes from time.

Crumplin revealed afterwards left-back Rico Morris is joining Fisher Athletic.

Pagham climbed to second with a 3-0 win at Hailsham thanks to goals from Sean Towers, Lee Bradshaw (penalty) and Michael Frangou.

Former Albion striker Joe Gatting scored twice for Whitehawk in a 4-0 win at home to Hassocks but manager George Parris said: “He should have had a hat-trick. He had a great chance with a header he should have done better with.”

Stuart Garrod scored Hawks’ other two goals.

Horsham YMCA are sixth after goals in the last five minutes from Steve Metcalf and Shaheen Sadough gave them a 2-0 win at Oakwood.

Manager Chris White said: “We played some good stuff but let ourselves down with the chances we missed. Steve Metcalf missed an absolute sitter just before he scored.”

Chichester scored twice in the last three minutes through Russell Hardwell and James Temple to win 3-2 at East Grinstead. Ben Vassallo was also on target with Marc Pelling and Dan Sullivan netting for the hosts.

Lingfield twice came from behind to win 4-2 at home to East Preston thanks to goals from Pani Ortis (two), Danny Gillard and Daniel Jones.

Arundel and Wick shared a 1-1 draw. Steve Davies put the visitors ahead, following up after Alex Bryant had saved his penalty, but James Crane scored a fine equaliser for the Mullets.

Arundel assistant Simon Butler said: “With the key players we had out I would have taken a point before the game.”

In the Sussex Senior Cup, two hat-tricks were not enough to decide the clash between Shoreham and Westfield which ended 3-3 after extra time. Darren Annis scored three identical goals for the Musselmen but Dominic Clarke’s treble helped second division Westfield battle back from 2-0 down.

In the Sussex RUR Cup Selsey went through 2-1 against Crawley Down in a game of three penalties.

Selsey’s Sean Dobbs saw his spot-kick cancelled out by a penalty from Mark Saunders. Dobbs later missed a penalty but Rob Brown hit Selsey’s winner after good work from Greg Robinson and Tom Ridley.

The home side gave a debut to former Chichester and Wick striker Steve Boston who has signed from Andover.

In the John O’Hara League Cup, Tom Levitt and Richie Watton netted as second division Peacehaven came from behind to win 2-1 at St Francis Rangers.

Boss Darren Guirey said: “After a bad start we totally dominated and the scoreline flattered them.”

Three Bridges went through 1-0 in a replay at home to Rye United thanks to a rare Ashley Dugdale goal. Manager Paul Faili said: “It was a peach of a goal from 25 yards. I didn’t cheer, I was in shock.”

Bridges have signed striker Tom Lyons, who started the season at Lewes.
