Whing future takes a twist

ANDREW Whing could be staying with Albion after Leeds won the race for his potential replacement.

Jason Crowe is moving to Elland Road from relegated Northampton, instead of joining the Seagulls.

Whing, who was holding out himself for a switch to Leeds, may now decide to accept Albion’s offer of a new two-year contract.

The right-back and reigning player of the season has stalled over re-signing, because of Leeds’ interest in him.

Albion boss Russell Slade covered his options by holding talks with Crowe, who played under him at Grimsby.

The 30-year-old was also wanted by Norwich, Charlton and Huddersfield but will officially sign for Leeds on July 1 as replacement for the long-serving Frazer Richardson, paving the way for a re-think by Whing.

He will have to make his mind up soon. Slade, back from a holiday in Portugal early next week, is considering other right-backs, including one from the Championship.

The transfer market for League One clubs has been stifled so far by the plans of Leeds in particular and ambitious Huddersfield, who have had a bid amounting to nearly £500,000 accepted by Coventry for Albion target Robbie Simpson.

Slade remains confident of landing several players on his shopping list.

They include the return of Gary Dicker from Stockport, plus loan deals for a winger from a Premier League club and Championship midfielder. Slade also his eye on another Championship midfielder and wide man, a Scottish goalkeeper and a League One centre half and winger.

Meanwhile, Doug Loft is poised to become the second Albion midfielder to be reunited with ex-boss Micky Adams at Port Vale following Tommy Fraser’s move to the Potteries club earlier this week.

Don't forget Albion fixtures for 2009-10 go online at theargus.co.uk from 10am today.

My feeling is that we are Mr Whing's safe option, a fall back if he can't get a better offer.....I know what I'd tell him to do if I was in charge.

If Whing was holding out for a deal to leeds then he can f off elsewhere, he betrayed the fans if he did.

Concerned as I am that Andy was waiting for an offer from Leeds first, I suppose we have to accept that he has a duty to himself to consider all available options before making a decision. Who knows - even if he got an offer from Leeds (for which I presume he wouldn't know the terms until the offer was made), perhaps he might have decided that he still preferred the Brighton offer - in which case we would be applauding his loyalty!

I suppose it's fair enough that he weighs up his options, but he now needs to move things forward and either sign with the Albion or leave. If things just drag on, he'll lose even more support from the fans, as his commitment and loyalty will be continually questioned. Come on AW, make your mind up!

I'm actually surprised Whing is weighing up his options to be honest, yes the man is a trier and gives his all, but apart from that he isn't the greatest player we've ever had, very limited ability, I'd have thought he'd jumped at the chance of a good 2 year deal, as I'd be surprised if many other teams come in for him, and there are prob better options out there now.

It fair enough to weigh up the options but not to say I will only sign for you if Leeds dont offer me a deal.
Thats not on in my book.

Maybe it is fair enough for Whing to weigh up his options as a player needs to get the best deal for himself and his family. However I think RS should give Whing a deadline of when he wants an answer if not time to say goodbye and move on. I agree he is a trier and 100% merchant but I am not convinced he is that good. I am sure there are other right backs around who are better.away

Some very silly postings on here today. Whing is a PROFESSIONAL footballer. It's his living. His ONLY committment is to himself and his family. Loyalty in football is strictly a fan's thing. Any other view is fantasy. If someone offered you a better job where would your loyalty lie?

Like fretlessbass and king wombat I don't see the problem. Whing is a professional footballer and is weighing up his job options, what's wrong with that? At no stage has he said "Brighton are the only club for me and even if I could earn twice as much at Leeds I wouldn't go there because I love the Albion so much."

Some people have got to learn to live in the real world.

All players should be ambitious for their own sake and their families so no problem with Whing waiting for his best option

Agree with Fretless and Wombat. Leeds have twice reached the play-offs now and if Whing prefers them it's no surprise. We only have ourselves to blame for last season's performance. It hasn't exactly put us in the shop window has it. Anyone know if it's true about us bidding for two southen players?

Has Slade signed Peter Andre?

Izzilew says...

Yes, Whing should weigh up his options carefully. I've always liked him a lot, but he should be aware of his limitations. What may be a good deal for his agent is not necessarily the best deal for him in the long run. My bet is that Leeds would have chewed him up and spat him out after a couple of matches. Think for yourself Whing !

Good luck for the future Mr Whing, enjoy the money. I won't be supporting you if you turn out for MY team next season.

£500K for a striker who couldn't hit a cow's backside! Are Brighton mad?

I'm very concerned that we're looking at a wide man!!! Surely it would be better to get someone who's fit, thin, a go-getter. Seriously, nothing will come to light until RS is back so try to be patient however difficult it may seem.

So Whing, who is after all a pro. player (not a committed long term fan like us) is considering his best option, would not we do the same if a better job offer may come up?

BUT - A Scottish goal keeper? Oh no! anything but that - please..

The player of the season vote has gone to Whings head, we were diabolical last year and he was marginally the best of a very bad bunch. He is not great and his distribution awful, we all admire his passion but that can only take you so far. He should take the 2 year contract and be grateful

Well said mate, he is not great and am surprised he's keeping his options open, as not mnay clubs better than us will come in for the TRIER!

seems a shame really as we lost players obviously not good enough, but who were commited to Brighton like Jake for instance . He was signed by Shrews to play alongside Grant Holt. Surely someone will come in for Holt before the start of the season as i rate him as as good player.
