Glenn Murray returns to lead the Albion attack against Leeds tomorrow with his reputation as one of the best strikers in League One firmly restored.

Murray goes into a shoot-out with former Carlisle colleague Jermaine Beckford, rejuvenated by a return to fitness and goalscoring form and the arrival of Gus Poyet as manager.

He is suddenly a far cry from the rather forlorn figure who handed in two transfer requests and suffered two double hernia operations, not to mention a brush with fans and a costly red card which incurred the wrath of Poyet’s predecessor.

Poyet spoke glowingly in The Argus earlier this week about Murray’s attributes following his two-goal starring role at Southampton last Sunday.

He insists the Cumbrian is here to stay and regards Murray as so important to Albion’s chances of victory against Leeds that he was left out of the FA Cup replay against Wycombe on Wednesday, to avoid the risk of a fifth booking and accompanying suspension.

Murray said: “We’ve all been inspired by what he’s had to say and the sessions he’s put on in the past week.

“My injury problems have been well documented and they have certainly halted me in my tracks.

“I’d never been injured for more than two weeks before I came to Brighton but this year has been a real low point in my career.

“Even now I still feel a bit of pain every now and again, which the doctors have said is just scar tissue and will eventually disappear, but I’m certainly feeling much better about myself.

“Now I just want to return to the form I showed before my problems. If I can get a run in the side I know I can score goals, like I showed at Southampton.

“My confidence is up, which it hasn’t been for some time, and these goals recently have done me a world of good. I’m enjoying my football again.”
