Gus Poyet insists he has no magic powers as he tries to conjure another victory for Albion in his first home league game against former club Leeds United.

Poyet has kicked off his managerial career by steering the Seagulls to wins at Southampton last Sunday and Wycombe in the FA Cup at Withdean on Wednesday.

Today’s visit of leaders Leeds signals the halfway point of a daunting start in League One for Poyet.

The Yorkshiremen’s journey south is followed by a trip to Norwich on Tuesday and a home game against Charlton a week later.

Poyet admitted: “If we had lost at Southampton it would have been really hard. It’s four top teams that I have to play in the first four and they are very risky games but sometimes people will understand you don’t have time to change things.

“I am telling you, I promise you, I am no magician. I am just a manager trying to work and make sure we get better. I promise you management is not easy but at the moment everything is fine. We are enjoying things.

“We can have a laugh and celebrate these little victories but it doesn’t stop. Now we have to forget that. We are facing the team at the top of the table.”

Poyet is hoping to emulate with Albion the long winning run he enjoyed alongside Dennis Wise in their second season at Leeds.

They recovered spectacularly from a 15-point penalty imposed on the club for their financial troubles before Poyet left for Spurs.

“It’s going to be nice to see everyone there – the staff and players that were with me,” Poyet said.

“They have changed a lot since then but it is going to be special, because of the support the Leeds fans gave me when I was there.

“Maybe in the beginning everyone is going to be supporting me but when the game starts they are probably going to change. Before and after no problem but the moment the game starts we are not friends.

“The good thing is I know everything about them, so I don’t have to rely too much on reports.

“They are top of the table and at the end of the season for sure you are where you deserve to be.

“After 15 games it is maybe not so clear but they are top, so at the moment they are the best, and we need to be at our best as well.”

Albion have reduced prices for next Saturday’s FA Cup second round tie at home to Rushden and Diamonds after fans complained about the cost of tickets for the Wycombe replay.

Adult prices range from £15 to £17 and gold members have until 5pm on Monday to claim their seats.
