Gus Poyet has pinpointed a moment of first-half misfortune as key to his side's 2-0 home defeat to Charlton.
The Seagulls were sunk by first-half goals from Deon Burton and Scott Wagstaff after James Tunnicliffe had headed against the underside of the Charlton bar.
Boss Poyet said: "If you score first the game is different. If you concede first, everything is uphill."
He added: "You have to risk when you are 2-0 down.
"Charlton were trying to slow the game down.
"We tried to go for the game but we didn't create as many chances as we expected "We got in a few crosses. On another day they drop for someone and it's a tap-in.
"Today they were maybe a yard too far from the players."
