GUS Poyet heads back to Swindon on Saturday convinced that Albion’s all-or-nothing record under him disguises genuine improvement.

He believes Friday’s unfortunate 2-1 home defeat by promotion-chasing Colchester was the most creative performance of his first month in charge.

Poyet’s Seagulls have won four games and lost four in all competitions, including an eyecatching opening victory at Southampton.

The Uruguayan had breathing space to work with the players on the training ground for the first time ahead of Colchester’s visit after a hectic fixture schedule.

He will enjoy another midweek match-free preparation for his return to the County Ground, where he was No. 2 under Dennis Wise, and is hoping for a similar level of performance with a different result.

Poyet said: “People will always remember my first game at Southampton’ because of the importance of that game and the television and the stadium.

“We were outstanding but I am 100 per cent sure that on Friday we were better in terms of creating chances but we lost.

“Of course, you prefer to play badly and win games but in the long term if we play like that and create that many chances we will win games.

“I think the players know what I want to do and that was reflected in the game, apart from the disappointing first 15 minutes. Now I am looking forward to another clear week.”

Fellow Swindon old boy Peter Brezovan could still be in goal on Saturday following Michel Kuipers' absence from the side against Colchester for the sixth game running because of a groin problem. Poyet said: “Michel is nearly there. He couldn't kick 100 per cent. That was the only problem. It is quite normal with a muscle problem.

“You think it is fine until you try other things and them sometimes you feel it, so you have to be careful.”
