Bennett ends on a high

Elliott Bennett ensured Albion's season ended with a win as they beat Yeovil 1-0 at Withdean today.

Bennett, runner-up to Andrew Crofts for the player-of-the-year award, added to his collection of superb goals with a right foot blast into the top corner from outside the box.

His 43rd-minute gem was the undisputed highlight of a pretty dull season-ending fixture.

The game was most notable for impressive debuts by youth teamers Mitch Walker and Jake Caskey.

Walker got the start in goal and made fine first-half saves from Kieran Murtagh and Dean Bowditch as well as handling the ball well.

Caskey became Albion's youngest ever peacetime player, 13 days after his 16th birthday, when he came on for a very confident 14-minute midfield cameo.

Albion finish the season in 13th place, nine points clear of relegated Gillingham.

I've just got home from the match and although it was typical end of season fare the debuts of Walker and Caskey give much optimism for the future. Caskey in particular looked so comfortable and confident on the ball that it is hard to believe his age. Added to the outstanding debut of Dunk last week we have much to look forward to.

Very sad news regarding Calderon, although it might be a decision he comes to regret. We may not yet be able to offer him the first class facilities he will enjoy at saints but one thing he was assured here was first team football.

This contract snub may come back to haunt him when he glances over at our promotion push from the saints bench or reserve team.

Perhaps Saints can afford it because they went into administration, and only paid their creditors 20p in the Pound. 10 point deductions are a farce.

He is moving to saints then, sad news indeed, but proves all these ridiculous transfer kitty rumours to be total rubbish again, but that does not mean we cannot compete at the top(see Blackpool). We need smart scouting and smart deals. I totally trust Poyet and his team to deliver that. It is just one player, we will be flying high next year hopefully.

End of season affair yes, but we won another game, which is important. The debutants Walker and Caskey were another major positive, hopefully they can push on, along with the other young professionals and make the squad on a regular basis next season. The transition squad is a fantastic idea by the way. I think Walker may push Brezovan for the No.1 spot next season, should play him as much as possible, in the Johnstone's Paint etc etc.

Chin up farside and keep taking the prozac!! Please do not be so d@mned miserable. Anyone would think you were one of the Withdean Whingers ;). It was obvious that Gus would try out a few things at the end of the season. The last few matches might not have been what is required for promotion, but there is big cause for optimism as posters above have already stated.

Inigo has let himself down with lack of principles, he was good news for us, but Gus is right not to be held to ransom, it sends out the wrong messages to players and their 'blood sucking' agents.
Chris Holroyd again showed that he is not ready to spearhead a league one attack (he can't say he hasn't been given the chance). Ashley can do it and so can Glen, but neither of them could be with us next season.
Jake Caskey gave a good account of himself, so let's hope he develops into a good first team choice.
I like the new kit, it has a 'tougher' look about it, and I always have a feeling that Albion have more success in stripes and blue shorts (probably just happy memories).
Numbers on the back of the shirts are far more visible.
The management have got a lot of work to do in the summer.

Agree totally we need to blood our up and coming stars in the JP Trophy and the carling cup as well. Much better than the limited reserve games and loans in non league. Well done Dunk,Caskey and Walker hope to see all of them feature in the first team next year.

Well it was great seeing two promising debuts from Mitch Walker and Jake Caskey. Walker looked confident and I thought his distribution was pretty good too, and Caskey did look very promising too. Hardly noticed Holroyd though so a striker is a priority really! As for Calderon?! Good riddance I say! Great player yes, but I would like someone to wear the Albion shirt with pride, he CLEARLY does not!! We will find more bargains out there. Heres to a great season next season :-)

Realist actually. I think 8th would be pretty good after the grim relegation battles of the last two seasons. Albion face a major problem as is evidenced by the Calderon episode - there are clubs in League one with more financial clout, and they will beat us to the better quality players. I expect a similar outcome with Lua Lua. Poyet has shown an admirable willingness to blood young players and this will reap rich rewards - eventually. Yes, onwards and upwards - but much more slowly than many contributors to this site expect.

Adamantly disagreed with you re: Forster in recent weeks but in fairness, Fretless, I do think you are making a good point here, although I don't think 8th is necessarily our limit....depends who we recruit and how they adapt to Team Gus.

Seagull Bazil, you are spot on: smart scouting and smart deals are the order of the day, not just next season but probably the one after too.

Am gutted Calde is leaving us (and I'm angry too!!!) but on reflection he IS replacable....a RB can be found.

With the decent new kit and early first team promise of Dunk, Walker and Caskey we still have things to cheer us up meantime.
