Tony Bloom wants Gus Poyet to launch a new era of stability by signing the long-term contract on offer at Albion.

The Seagulls chairman is close to agreeing a four-year deal with boss Poyet and expects assistant Mauricio Taricco to stay too.

Poyet is currently in South America but, on his return, is expected to tie up details on his contract and sign.

Now Bloom has underlined why he is so keen for Poyet, who is reportedly attracting interest from Portsmouth, to stay on a long-term basis.

He said: “We have changed managers a lot here in recent years. Preferably that should not be the case.

“We think Gus is the right man to bring the club forward. I’ve been saying that for the last six months and I think everyone can see it. All being well that will now be sorted.”

Bloom secured the former Chelsea star for 18 months last November when he made him Albion’s third manager in 2009 and 12th since the club left the Goldstone Ground.

The remaining year of that agreement would be replaced by a contract taking him to 2014 and through the first three seasons at Falmer.

This is Poyet’s first job as a No. 1 having been assistant at Swindon, Leeds and Tottenham.

Bloom added: “You don’t want to take risks but I am clear he is the right man for the long term, and I think everybody can see that, even if we have a few difficult moments along the way.

“It’s a two-way street. What Gus can offer us is his talent as a very good manager.

“He has got charisma, he has led us up the table and has the potential to be successful here.

“He loves working in Brighton.

“He knows there is huge potential here. He can do things his own way.

“He has freedom to do things for the long term with the football club.”
