Matej Zagar produced a superb solo 16-point show for depleted Eastbourne as they were outclassed 63-29 by Elite League leaders Poole last night.

The Slovenian stunned a big crowd by scorching to the fastest time of the season at the Dorset bowl in heat one.

He produced a lightning quick gate to blast clear of Grand Prix star Chris Holder and world under-21 champion Darcy Ward going into the first turn.

Then he powered away from the Pirates pair to comfortably take the chequered flag in 58.46 seconds, lowering Wolves heat leader Fredrik Lindgren’s previous best time of 58.70.

Poole’s Bjarne Pedersen got away from the tapes in front of Zagar in heat five but the Eagle brilliantly blitzed inside the Dane on the back straight to go on and win by 60 metres as the Sussex side only trailed 18-12 at that stage.

Eastbourne, without unavailable Lukas Dryml and ill Joonas Kylmakorpi, dug deep to compete strongly early on.

But their chances of causing a major upset were sunk when they conceded five 5-1s in a row as Pirates stepped up a gear, and no-one was able to give Zagar any worthwhile support.

The Slovenian outgunned Holder to win race 13 and then spectacularly passed Ward and Watt to grab his fourth triumph in the final race.

Eagles go to Ipswich tonight (7.30).

Poole: Watt 11+1 (5), Pedersen 11 (4), Ward 10+3 (5), Holder 9+1 (4), Mroczka 8+2 (4), Havelock 7+3 (4), Doyle 7+2 (4).

Eagles: Zagar 16^ (5), Lampart 5 (4), Wright 4 (6), Woodward 2 (5), Kling 2 (6), Gustafsson 0 (3), Kylmakorpi r/r.
