Ringmer moved eight points clear of the relegation zone thanks to manager Bob Munnery’s extensive knowledge of his players.

Marc Whiteman continued another productive season with both goals as the Blues won 2-1 away to Shoreham.

The turning point, though, came just before half-time when Ringmer had goalkeeper Gary Trott sent off but Dominic Shepherd’s penalty was saved by stand-in Adam Mitchell, who is normally a striker.

Although Nick Lansdale did equalise in the second half, Whiteman’s 19th of the campaign 14 minutes from time sealed three valuable points for the visitors.

Mitchell was not the obvious choice to go in goal but Munnery knew he was the right man.

He said: “Adam came straight on and saved the penalty. He has played in goal before years ago in youth football and that was something I knew.

“When Trottie was sent off I had no hesitation in putting him in goal. It was three valuable points for us.”

Munnery was also full of praise for Whiteman who was deemed surplus to requirements at Whitehawk earlier this season despite finishing as top scorer as they were promoted from the County League last season.

He added: “Marc has been very good for us and we are delighted to have a player of his quality. He got his second goal on Saturday when we were playing only one up front after the sending off.”
