Gus Poyet has admitted he cannot wait to run away from Withdean.

Albion play their final match tomorrow at the converted athletics stadium they have called home for 12 years before moving to The Amex next season.

Poyet’s League One champions were unbeaten at Withdean this season until losing to Southampton last Saturday but the manager will not be shedding any tears when the final whistle blows against Huddersfield.

He said: “I am going to be running out probably. I don’t know who is trying not to make it sound so bad.

“I remember when I first went there with Leeds. It was absolutely horrible and in the first half we played really badly as well. It’s the sort of place where you want to try to get promoted so you don’t have to come back.

“I’m delighted to be getting away from Withdean. I know it has been good for us this season, apart from the last game. It has helped us achieve what we wanted to achieve but I’m just looking forward to The Amex.

“If I had to play there week in and week out I would probably try to move away because enjoying playing, having the fans close to you, putting pressure on the opposition – Withdean doesn’t assist that.

“Good teams and champions always have a good home record. That is nothing unusual.

“It looked very difficult to achieve that at the beginning, because of the place it is, so I am not too sad about somewhere I don’t like.

“If we go back it will be to watch the reserves, if they can play there, and to use it maybe to train.”
