Tony Godden has backed Albion’s keepers to excel in the Championship.

But he insists the starting spot will be up for grabs when players report back for training at the end of next month.

Casper Ankergren started 45 games for the Seagulls on their march to the League One title while Peter Brezovan and Michael Poke were limited almost exclusively to cup appearances.

However, Godden says the trio keep each other on their toes and will ensure the Seagulls are secure at the back as they step up a division.

The former West Brom and Chelsea No. 1 said: “It was the best group of goalkeepers in League One. Looking at the Championship, we are among the top teams there as well with the stable of keepers we have got.

“I’d be surprised if another Championship club has got three keepers who are as good and as experienced. We are very lucky to have what we’ve got.

“I was with Derby in the Championship and it’s a completely different ball game.

“Players are more physical, there is more individual skill. We have got to compete with that. But our three keepers are more than capable.”

Poke is expected to agree a new deal at The Amex and has been hailed as the ultimate professional by Godden.

Although the former Southampton man did not get league action last term, Godden is convinced the club need three senior keepers.

He said: “Why should you be scratching around for somebody if a goalkeeper gets injured on Saturday and you’ve got a game on Tuesday?

“It’s not a professional way of doing it.

“You need them for training as well, people forget that.

“Pokey has made a great contribution to Casper and Peter last season and they have done the same for him.

“The three of them rotate in training. If there is a small-sided game going on, two of them can play and I work the other.”
