CHRIS HUGHTON has praised Lewis Dunk for ignoring transfer speculation – and reeling off a consistent run of performances.

The Albion boss believes his centre-back showed admirable maturity when he was punished for on-field errors last season.

He has continued that solid form this term, despite reports of Premier League interest and a failed bid by Crystal Palace.

Dunk, who signed a new five-year deal this week, is set to be partnered by Shane Duffy on his home debut as the Seagulls host Brentford tomorrow.

Asked how the No.5 had developed, Hughton told The Argus: “It has been in producing consistent performances.

“He can be a threat at set plays as well which is always a plus.

“Lewis showed his maturity last season when he went through a difficult period when it seemed every mistake he made would be punished.

“He came through that and was very good in the later part of the season.

“He has been very good for us this season as well and we are, of course, very aware of all the speculation round him.

“Right through that period he pulled out a really good level of performance.

“I’m delighted – particularly being a local lad.”

Recent signing Sebastien Pocognoli is competing for a defensive berth against the Bees and Dale Stephens is expected to start.

Hughton said: “We have to get back down to what we do best. We have back-to-back home games and we want to start that with getting a good win.”
