Albion grab hard-earned point

Albion celebrate Ashley Barnes's goal (photos Simon Dack) Albion celebrate Ashley Barnes's goal (photos Simon Dack)

Ashley Barnes scored as Albion drew 1-1 at Blackpool today.

But they had to withstand concerted pressure before emerging with a hard-won point.

Barnes got the final touch after Blackpool made a mess of dealing with a flick-on in their own box on 57 minutes.

Kirk Broadfoot's header back to his keeper fell short and Andrew Crofts prodded the ball into the path of Barnes for an easy finish

Elliot Grandin headed the equaliser on 72 minutes as the Seagulls’ marking for once let them down.

But the visitors otherwise defended well, enjpoyed a few let-offs and had Kuszczak to thank for great saves from Grandin, Nathan Delfouneso and Angel as they weathered the late storm.

Ian Evatt and Tom Ince were guilty of bad misses for the hosts

Craig Mackail-Smith almost secured a smash and grab win when his overhead kick was tipped over by Matt Gilks on 81 minutes.

Well--I have to eat my words, BHA did score first and I guess we do need a bit of luck, they all count but not exactly a 'well worked goal' but a goals a goal however it comes. I guess Blackpool is not the easiest place to go and I am sure Albion expected a tough game--which it seems they got. But a well ground out 1 pointer. ---however the big problems still exist. I see other teams in this division scored 3 and 4 goals--home and away so there are decent strikers. Sure, Gus will be more relieved than pleased with the 1 point but he and the Team have a lot more work to do to restore confidence that we are going to be a team to be reckoned with. Hope M-S is OK for the next game or we will be even thinner on the ground as far as forwards go---unless of course Gus makes a killing in that dept this week!!

A point at Blackpool. I'll take that. The slump is now over and we are gonna whack Leeds next Fri 6-0 you'll see! Quite glad really that we had our slump early inhe season. I wonder if Gus is still bored?

Look at the stats fromthe Boro game albionbloke, they mean sweet fa if they not turned into goals. Seems we were under the cosh in the end but hey ho we coulda nicked it.

Having watched the second half on my pc I reckon that was probably the hardest point we will earn this season. So unlucky not to nick it near the end, CMS came so close.

Back five kept us in the game but just one error led to their goal, a goal they truly deserved. I'll take the point.

Hard to have a pop at our front line as for the most part they were helping with the defense. Barnes got his poachers goal, nothing wrong with that.

Bridge, Abd and Bruno, during the 45 mins I watched, were top class, as was Tom. .

It's the way it is. Noone was tricky but his final ball was often rubbish. Would he have improved with playing more often or playing full games or was it the case he didn't play within the system Gus wants? I see Wood got 2 for Millwall. Same thing again.

Pleased for Vincelot he was a good reliable if unspectacular player for us and will thrive in League 2 and indeed League 1.

Glad we got something out of the game as from the stats it looks as if we were under the cosh for most of it.

Leeds Friday, nervous with anticipation!!

No surprise to me that Barnes scored. It's been coning for the last couple of games. No disgrace to concede against Blackpool either. A well earned point and hopefully just the start.

6 games without a win and now 9 points off the top of the table and the season has barely started. How long before we have to say thanks GP and look elsewhere for inspiration. 6 games without a win isn't acceptable, and couldn't even beat rock bottom Ipswich. Worrying times indeed.

I was not at the game but managed to see it online, for what little it is worth ,until the lads that were there get home and post, this is MHO .Hammond touched the ball about 6 times during the game and each time it was to screw up.Its getting silly now, they played 3 strikers and we played 1,take a guess who did all the defending,Orlandi comes on in about 76 mins, and was our first sub.We should have moved Barnes into the middle from the wing as soon as we scored, that would perhaps have kept some of the pressure off the back four, and given us a slim chance of a second. As for Dobbie,no apparent desire or will to fight ,run,or create ANYTHING,albeit for the entire 8 mins he was on the pitch,Kuszczak was easily the MOTM ,what an incredible keeper, saving us on at least five ocassions.Bridcutt brilliant as always, but looked like he had that fifth yellow on his mind the whole game.CMS again, just write one line for him and push repeat every game,he worked non stop and took a thump for his trouble, but once more he had little if any support.Gus for the love of pete, give us two up front!!.UTA

9 points off the top yes but how many outside the playoffs?

Today we played against a team that didn't park the bus and we got a well earned point. Isn't the object to try and get a point away and win at home?

Our issues are with breaking down a determined defense when we play at home. It is far too early to say we are done and as for Gus, well he got us where we are and we owe him more than just a few games before we even think about replacing him, games with all players available.

I have to say I think your comment harsh but you are entitled to it.

Promotion has to be the target, not mid table mediocrity. I wouldn't be surprised to hear GP's name linked with the QPR job before too long. GP has thrown his hat into the ring with recent comments and I won't be surprised if the QPR board come knocking. Harry Redknapp has a long association with south coast clubs, Pompey, Bournemouth , so wouldn't be surprised if 'Arry was holding the reins at the Amex before the season is out.

A good point (at Blackpool that is, as for some of the other 'points'...)
We have better players at the club than Noone, Wood and Vincelot (although i wish all of them well). That is why they have gone. The fact that the players we have got are not winning games (at the moment) or scoring goals is frustrating but hardly boardroom level stuff... Yet.
My WUM radar is not working too well today and i can't be bothered to keep tabs on the multiple personalities that some posters utilise.
Looking forward to Friday and a home performance that lives up to the name.

No, I cant agree. Questions in the tactical/line up level not baordroom level is the real problem IMO.

Once again, CMS isolated and trying to play a traditional hold up center forward role that he will never be, and kept giving the ball away today trying to play that role. Nobody else getting forward to support or play off of him anyway?
IMO Barnes should be the up front striker instead of playing deep and tracking back,
CMS should play the deeper Barnes role, but running the channels and not tracking back, and playing off the front man instead of being the front man, and we need two wide to compliment that.
In that formation Dobbie is also not suited to being the front man so you have choose between Dobbie and CMS as starter. Line up that I'd like to see: 4:2:3:1, instead of the relentless
5:2:3 that Gus seems intent on sticking with, which incidentally becomes a 5:3:2 with one wide and an isolated front man as we get overrun in midfield.
In a nutshell, we end up playing too deep with a flimsy attacking option, and that's down to Gus, and not a need to buy a striker.

4:2:3:1 is the answer: which when attacking, allows Bridge and Bruno to bomb forward and gives us 5 players across the front.

Kusckcak

Bruno, Greer, ElAbd, Bridge.

Bridcutt, Hammond.

Buckley, CMS, Orandi.

Barnes.

Sub options:
Crofts for Hammond.
Dobbie for CMS.
LuaLua for Buckley.
Lopez for Orlandi.

Gus's insistence of having Bridcutt so deep as a fifth defender means we have to sacrifice having enough attacking option by having Barnes track back into midfield, which is why we get left with an isolated CMS playing an unfamiliar role.
Having the best defense in the league is great, but what's it for when we have the least effective attacking stats/options in the league?

Is Gus`s way of playing the game taking the creativity and vision out of the players minds, the forwards cannot be expected to create things and score goals when nothing is created from the backs. The supply chain is non existant to the men up front.I wonder what player will tell the Argus this Monday,we have learned from this match. The men at the back have learned how not to concede to many goals but are still to learn how to supply the forwards with creative passing and vision

I fail to see how; after a lucky draw that we have turned the corner. We are not creating any where near enough chances and even when we do they are missed. Mackail Smith does not deserve to be left up front alone; with a partner I know he will get 20 plus this season. We now know that Hammond and Dobbie are not up to it; Lua Lua is a waste of time; to unpredictable. Unless we get this striker we will only finish mid table at best. The basis is there but Gus is still short of creative midfielder and a forward; forget Vicente as he should be posted back to Spain first class. Ross Barkley is the answer to our midfield problems.

Judging by the comments on the radio from those at the game, difficult to be optimistic that we can reach the playoffs. One caller feared that goals would dry up for CMS with current lack of support and I think that may well prove to be the case. The manager seems to be unable to solve the problem.
Turning to Nooney, I thought the transfer was good business. As namgo49 has posted, tricky player but rubbish final ball . Now we find Nooney is a star player with the top of the table team !

The good news is that QPR are rooted to the bottom of the Prem and if it stays like this, in the next transfer window I see Bobby Z coming our way.

You never know, this might be the reason why we have been holding out for a target man. Worth the wait if it is.

This really is an excellent post and spot on with the assessment of the shortcomings of the way the team are being told to play. Not a great deal to add, other than that Barnes gets a bad press on here very unfairly I believe. He is being played out of position all the time and is not therefore playing to his strenghths. He is the classic, predatory striker or goal poacher as demonstrated today. Therefore, I too agree totally that he needs to be the forward striker if Gus insists on playing the one striker system.
