Albion grab hard-earned point
5:01pm Saturday 27th October 2012 in Albion By Brian Owen
Ashley Barnes scored as Albion drew 1-1 at Blackpool today.
But they had to withstand concerted pressure before emerging with a hard-won point.
Barnes got the final touch after Blackpool made a mess of dealing with a flick-on in their own box on 57 minutes.
Kirk Broadfoot's header back to his keeper fell short and Andrew Crofts prodded the ball into the path of Barnes for an easy finish
Elliot Grandin headed the equaliser on 72 minutes as the Seagulls’ marking for once let them down.
But the visitors otherwise defended well, enjpoyed a few let-offs and had Kuszczak to thank for great saves from Grandin, Nathan Delfouneso and Angel as they weathered the late storm.
Ian Evatt and Tom Ince were guilty of bad misses for the hosts
Craig Mackail-Smith almost secured a smash and grab win when his overhead kick was tipped over by Matt Gilks on 81 minutes.

Good to grab an away point but judging by the stats (shots, corners), seems we were heavily outplayed. Look forward to comments from anyone who was there.

Back five kept us in the game but just one error led to their goal, a goal they truly deserved. I'll take the point.
Hard to have a pop at our front line as for the most part they were helping with the defense. Barnes got his poachers goal, nothing wrong with that.
Bridge, Abd and Bruno, during the 45 mins I watched, were top class, as was Tom. .

Noone superb AGAIN for Cardiff, Vincelot scores for Gillingham! Dear oh dear only a flukey goal for us. I think they need to ask some questions ay boardroom level
Pleased for Vincelot he was a good reliable if unspectacular player for us and will thrive in League 2 and indeed League 1.
Glad we got something out of the game as from the stats it looks as if we were under the cosh for most of it.
Leeds Friday, nervous with anticipation!!

6 games without a win and now 9 points off the top of the table and the season has barely started. How long before we have to say thanks GP and look elsewhere for inspiration. 6 games without a win isn't acceptable, and couldn't even beat rock bottom Ipswich. Worrying times indeed.
Today we played against a team that didn't park the bus and we got a well earned point. Isn't the object to try and get a point away and win at home?
Our issues are with breaking down a determined defense when we play at home. It is far too early to say we are done and as for Gus, well he got us where we are and we owe him more than just a few games before we even think about replacing him, games with all players available.
I have to say I think your comment harsh but you are entitled to it.

We have better players at the club than Noone, Wood and Vincelot (although i wish all of them well). That is why they have gone. The fact that the players we have got are not winning games (at the moment) or scoring goals is frustrating but hardly boardroom level stuff... Yet.
My WUM radar is not working too well today and i can't be bothered to keep tabs on the multiple personalities that some posters utilise.
Looking forward to Friday and a home performance that lives up to the name.

Once again, CMS isolated and trying to play a traditional hold up center forward role that he will never be, and kept giving the ball away today trying to play that role. Nobody else getting forward to support or play off of him anyway?
IMO Barnes should be the up front striker instead of playing deep and tracking back,
CMS should play the deeper Barnes role, but running the channels and not tracking back, and playing off the front man instead of being the front man, and we need two wide to compliment that.
In that formation Dobbie is also not suited to being the front man so you have choose between Dobbie and CMS as starter. Line up that I'd like to see: 4:2:3:1, instead of the relentless
5:2:3 that Gus seems intent on sticking with, which incidentally becomes a 5:3:2 with one wide and an isolated front man as we get overrun in midfield.
In a nutshell, we end up playing too deep with a flimsy attacking option, and that's down to Gus, and not a need to buy a striker.
4:2:3:1 is the answer: which when attacking, allows Bridge and Bruno to bomb forward and gives us 5 players across the front.
Kusckcak
Bruno, Greer, ElAbd, Bridge.
Bridcutt, Hammond.
Buckley, CMS, Orandi.
Barnes.
Sub options:
Crofts for Hammond.
Dobbie for CMS.
LuaLua for Buckley.
Lopez for Orlandi.
Gus's insistence of having Bridcutt so deep as a fifth defender means we have to sacrifice having enough attacking option by having Barnes track back into midfield, which is why we get left with an isolated CMS playing an unfamiliar role.
Having the best defense in the league is great, but what's it for when we have the least effective attacking stats/options in the league?
But what do I know ?

PressBoxTeaBoy wrote:This really is an excellent post and spot on with the assessment of the shortcomings of the way the team are being told to play. Not a great deal to add, other than that Barnes gets a bad press on here very unfairly I believe. He is being played out of position all the time and is not therefore playing to his strenghths. He is the classic, predatory striker or goal poacher as demonstrated today. Therefore, I too agree totally that he needs to be the forward striker if Gus insists on playing the one striker system.

weststandupperlacostInteresting that no-one commented on this piece of "news". Also interesting that no-one is seemingly that worried at the moment if Gus suddenly departed. There are some good managers looking for a decent club. Harry and Mick McCarthy to name just two. Honestly can't see him going anywhere atm, especially to that lot.

Well--I have to eat my words, BHA did score first and I guess we do need a bit of luck, they all count but not exactly a 'well worked goal' but a goals a goal however it comes. I guess Blackpool is not the easiest place to go and I am sure Albion expected a tough game--which it seems they got. But a well ground out 1 pointer. ---however the big problems still exist. I see other teams in this division scored 3 and 4 goals--home and away so there are decent strikers. Sure, Gus will be more relieved than pleased with the 1 point but he and the Team have a lot more work to do to restore confidence that we are going to be a team to be reckoned with. Hope M-S is OK for the next game or we will be even thinner on the ground as far as forwards go---unless of course Gus makes a killing in that dept this week!!
