Gus: We couldn't afford to keep Murray

Glenn Murray scored 22 goals as Albion won League One
Albion boss Gus Poyet insists the club could not afford to keep Glenn Murray.
But he admits he was surprised by the centre forward’s decision to join big rivals Crystal Palace.
Poyet takes his in-form team to Selhurst Park tomorrow with Murray on a prolific streak.
He has hit 15 goals in 16 outings this season, including two home hat-tricks and seven in his last three appearances at Selhurst.
Murray, 29, quit Albion for Palace for a 75% hike in wages in May 2011 after spearheading the Seagulls’ League One title success with 22 goals.
His controversial departure has baffled some supporters, as Albion continue their long search for a target man but Poyet told The Argus: “It’s simple, at that time we couldn’t pay him within our budget. We were not able to pay that amount of money at that time. “He was our top scorer. You don’t let your top scorer go away for free but we couldn’t (afford him).
“That has nothing to do with now. I know people are going to say ‘What is he talking about now, they are paying this player this or this player that’.
“At that time, when he left the club, we couldn’t. It was impossible.
“Of course, at that time you don’t know where he is going to go and you don’t expect him to go to Palace. That is his decision and his family’s decision, so fair enough.”

Strange he was here for many seasons and suddenly we cant afford him,usually parties can thrash out a compromise if BOTH parties are willing.But going to a poorer team like Palace does not make sense.Seems like Gus was making a point and exercising his authority.

When this money grabbing traitor last came up on this site,i said at the time that had he showed some loyalty and stayed until we moved to the Amex,Mr Bloom and Gus would make it worth his while. I would put good money that we would now be paying him more than they are!.

A profoundly foolish posting. Loyalty is strictly for supporters NOT players. They have a relatively short career and have to do the best for themselves and their families. Which of us would not do the same ?

Although the cap has been increased this season that sort of wage would still have een out of reach and suggestions that CMS is on £20k per week are far of the mark ,there is a cap on currently that is well below that.
The only option at the time he left and it was on a free transfer as his contract had expired, would may have been to offer some sort of bonus per season,if that could have been agreed then we would have the fall back of being able to ask a transfer fee if he decided to leave in that period. The galling thing is we were not in any position to demand a fee.

All through football history,every team without exception has players who have repaid their clubs with loyalty.
That doesn`t mean if a rival offers you double your wages you shouldn`t take it.
But if that club is responsible for turning you into the player you are,then imo you owe them the opportunity to meet that offer or at the least make some concessions. My problem with GM was he would have known his wage increase ahead of the start of the new season,all he had to do was to level with TB and GP.
AS soon as the ST sales went through the roof,he would have been offered a new contract and better salary. But just like Sterling at Liverpool this morning,greed got the better and he wanted it there and then,no give and take.
Give me players like Kerry Mayo,Gary Hart,Michel Kuipers,Adam El Abd,Charlie Oatway,anyday!!!..UT

I don't remember clubs coming in for any of the above mentioned players and offering to increase their wages by 75 per cent. This might explain their 'loyalty'.

75% increase in wages, sounds a lot but is it really. How much could we have been paying him considering what our revenues were, at that time. I would guess that there are several players within our team making more than he is right now.

Even less so - they only have a 15 year career at most, with 5 or 6 of those years making decent money. For a footballer it is about winning and money. If I was Glenn Murray and I had 2 offers on the table, one 75% higher than the other I would have done the same thing, even as a Brighton fan. We should have secured him on a longer contract in the first place that allowed for an increase if we were promoted. This palace rivalry is over played anyway....

Secondly they didn`t have a transfer fee to pay,otherwise he wouldn`t have gone to them,because they couldn`t afford 75% increase.

And lastly,who in their right minds offers ANY lower league player 75% straight increase until they are at least proven at that level??.
Having said that how do you know who did or didn`t offer what to any of the players i mentioned.As far as im aware supporters aren`t consulted on the buying ,selling or negotiations of every player in the squad,you are obviously more privileged than the rest of us!.UTA

1. He is now a Palarse player and it is unforgivable to move out rivals. I hate Palace in a non standing up kind of way. I wish them ill in a comical kind of way.
2. Were i a professional footballer with a limited time to apply my trade and provide a better life for my family, i know what i would do. Especially as loyalty is a one way street. How many of the 'anyone but Barnes' club would happily reward his loyalty were it to be demostrated in the fashion suggested?
3. I applaud Andy Naylor for addressing the issue which (if not answered previously) has been the source of ongoing debate for the last season and a half. There you go. We couldn't afford him. Didn't have the budget available at the time. Budget has now improved but he took his chances elsewhere. With a firm offer on the table. End of (not)...
Now Andy... What Gus's thoughts on our need for a new striker (if there is one)? Is Vicente anywhere near fit? Oh and is he still considering a new centre back?

If they get injured they are insured against earnings as well.. so its a win win for most !
Right back to tomorrow , i think we can do it ! I have a gut instinct that lots of players have points to prove , small personal battles and it will raise our game and we can show what an amazing team we are !

Murray is really the only striker they have shut him down and or, shut off his supply from midfield.
We have a better keeper and a better back four but only Buckley can match them in midfield quality.
To my mind this game will be won or lost in midfield.

Wage structure is important for a squad. It is not just one player but it would not be worth unsettling everybody if they ,at the time, paid him out of the norm.

Always makes laugh when i see people write that football players have short careers so should be paid alot of money ! So do they become unemployable after they have hung up their boots then ? So coaching, management, media or some other job isnt a second career ? I would love to be paid a million a month (Rooney) over a "short" career or 10/15 years ! Just for interest I checked out the fantasy league points for Palace. Murray, as a striker, has 47 points, the next best striker for Palace is a guy called, Wilbraham, he has just 4 points, says a lot. CMS is on 29 and Branes has 16.

The loss was away to Leeds, 2-1 and the draw was last week away to Hull, 0-0.
The wins came from 3 home games and 1 away match. They managed to beat Derby, Ipswich and Blackburn at home and Peterborough away.
For me the best of their results this month was the beating of Blackburn 2-0 at home, and that was very early in the month.
Their last two games, Leeds and Hull both away matches, have seen them only get 1 point, but these teams were a better test for them, just as I expect us to be.
Palace score goals at home, their last three home games have yielded 10 for and 0 against, 5 against Ipswich, 3 against Derby and 2 from the Blackburn match.
Tomorrow we find out how their striking power stacks up against our back five. We also find out how our midfield compares to theirs, an area of the game we must win.
Taking into account all the months results for both teams I think Gus will start with;
Our normal back 5 (Bridge to be fit)
Buckley, Bridcutt, Hammond and Orlandi.
CMS and Barnes.

There will be clubs that overpay in the dream of getting to the prem, and then go into administration to clear their debts.
We won't be matching them.
There will also be clubs coming down from The Prem that will be getting parachute payments for a number of years.

Then probably recoup that much when they sell him on.
When finished our magnificent Amex will hold approx 30,750,hopefully averaging gates of around 28,500-29,500.
As for how much money being wasted on players not ever likely to play,your guess would be as good as anybody`s. But i doubt a shrewd businessman like TB wastes much...

If Hoskins gets the start tomorrow then, IMHO, he will be the lone striker and CMS will play behind him.
If Barnes gets the nod, then CMS is up front.
I have a feeling that Gus will put Barnes in because he will scrap, and bite at their ankles.
Hoskins apears to be more polished in his approach to the game, tomorrow, IMHO, won't be about prettyness, it's going to come down to who fights hardest.

So we let a player go who must have been valued at at least 500k, so we could save the 300k on his new 3 year deal he was looking for. Then we spend 2.5 million on a player who is on MORE than GM was. Hindsight ?
No the biggest mistake the club has made because it comes back to haunt us every time we play CP. if CMS had set the world alight then things would seem different, but he hasn't.
