Craig Mackail-Smith would love to outscore rival striker Billy Sharp

First published in Albion by

Albion striker Craig Mackail-Smith has great respect for Billy Sharp – but he is determined to outscore him this season.

The two hotshots will be on duty at opposite ends of the pitch as the Seagulls host Nottingham Forest at The Amex today.

Mackail-Smith is Albion’s leading scorer this season with ten goals in 18 league appearances.

Sharp, who is on loan for the season from Southampton, has six in 18 for Forest including three in his last four games.

Mackail-Smith will be looking for the 100th goal of his Football League career this afternoon while Sharp currently sits on 125 from 20 more appearances.

The Albion marksman said: “Billy Sharp is a fantastic striker, he has scored lots of goals in this division. He will be a player to watch and we need to make sure he doesn’t enjoy himself today.

“He is a great player and we have got to make sure we mark him properly and don’t give him any chances.”

Mackail-Smith is currently eighth on the list of Championship top scorers this season – a list jointly led by Burnley’s Charlie Austin and Crystal Palace’s Glenn Murray with 18 apiece.

Like the so-called goalkeepers’ union, Mackail-Smith admits there is a lot of mutual respect among the leading strikers – and also plenty of competition.

He said: “There are a lot of very good strikers in this division and you do your best to outscore them.

“It is always best when you come up against another good striker. It is good competition to see what they are like.”

macca is 100% correct regarding billy sharpe. A quality striker in this division, and what a pairing these two would make. Go get him gus in january. Here s hoping billy has a bad day at the office today.

IrishGull with regard to Brighton, or any of the top eight teams in the championship, would any of them actualy consider selling their best strikers to their rivals?

I accept it's different with loan players but would we sell CMS, for any amount of money, to a team that could stop us from getting promoted, I don't think so and I don't think other clubs would do it either.

If we are to get one or two new strikers I think they will have to come on loan from the prem or bought from abroad. But yes, we could make a bid for Billy as he is on loan.

agree with that vegas, but just my personal opinion about sharpe, have been touting him on here for along time. The two together would test any defence in this division. I guess its all down to what he would be valued at, in the region of two million i guess

Campo it would take too long to explain why I live here, and this is probabaly not the place to do so, but I will say, what happened yesterday was not America, it was one sicko.

Today Campo I think we need more than a draw, we must keep Forest behind us and we need to to put pressure on the top six.

Your on the money IRISHGULL, Southampton paid 1.8M for him ,(sorry for the lousy pun) i think it depends on whether our south coast mates stay up or not,as to them selling him on.
But we could do a lot worse than to try for him,im sure he has equal respect for our superb CMS,the thought of playing alongside Craig might sway him.
The biggest problem is he is a northerner ,and although he signed for a southern club, does he see his future down south long term?. UTA

Well as you say Tug he did sign for a southern club so maybe it's not a problem.

A bid of 3 million should get him but what would Forest bid to keep him. If Southampton survive the drop I think there is more chance of him going than if they get relagated.
