Vicente a step closer to return

The Argus: Vicente trains with Albion's first team yesterday. Picture courtesy of Paul Hazlewood Vicente trains with Albion's first team yesterday. Picture courtesy of Paul Hazlewood

Vicente has moved a stage closer to his Albion comeback.

The Spanish playmaker resumed training with the first team squad yesterday.

Depending on how he reacts he could be in contention for a place on the bench against Derby County at The Amex on Saturday.

Manager Gus Poyet revealed to The Argus: “He trained with us for the first time after training all last week with the development squad.

“He looked all right, normal. I don’t know how his body is going to react. As you can imagine, the intensity of training with the kids is totally different to the intensity with us.

“Tuesday is usually a very hard day so we changed it slightly because of him. The first part was nice and steady, the last part quite hard, so he is going to feel it for sure. We’ll see how he reacts.”

Thigh trouble has restricted Vicente to one brief Championship appearance as a substitute so far this season, against Cardiff back in August.

Great news for the club and Viccy. I really hope any reaction to the intense training is short lived and he can resume his playing career with us, deep thigh injuries can be very difficult to heal so fingers crossed that we have back before too long the finest footballer that i have ever seen in the stripes.

On a more positive note- just read on Sky Sports that Hughton does not envisage much movement at Norwich this January---so maybe he will leave our players alone??

The plain truth is that we have been fed a whole load of chicken feed on this story.

His injury is non specific as are his whereabouts for the last four months, as is his progress, or lack of.

Like many, I am sure, I doubt that his absence has been due to injury at all?

This, his inclusion is academic to the team IMO. His desire to play is not evident and so to lay any hope of his lifting the team to new heights is both unfounded and unwarranted as far as I can see.

If he does return, great, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. We have heard all this before. We have other more reading needs in the team than our so called play makers return!

You know, we are all wondering about this 'target' man Gus is seeking though someone mentioned Drogba being the best lone striker he seen. Suarez does the same for Liverpool and is a 1 man scoring machine at a mere 5'10''. CMS is probably faster with less technical ability so if and when our lost Spaniard returns then lets hope he can pull the strings and punish with our superiority. Our strength is football, we have pacey technically gifted wide men who perhaps need to lift their heads and pick the ball as opposed to hitting the 6yd box and of course more bodies hitting the areas these balls enter.
Perhaps pie in the sky but football is a simple game and i believe we are very, very close to achieving our dream.

Still can´t get my head around the pasting that Gus and Vicente have had over the last few months over this injury

Gus has always stated he is injured with a thigh strain and stated often he is in re-hab.

The nature of his injury is a strain to the quadriceps muscle which is the big one on top of your thigh which regulates the extention of the knee

However, this muscle group(as the name suggests) is split into four, tears in muscle fibre range in severity from minor to full rupture and rest and no sport activity along with cold presses is the long way back to recovery.

Little wonder he has not been seen training.
I trust the medical staff we have to give him back to us in good shape when the time is right and it looks like soon.

The whole "Vicente situation" has broadly from a fans and PR angle been handled poorly of course - he'll still be massively cheered by 90%+ of the home crowd of course who just look to see us win and play great football!!

Vicente, Bruno (on form), Orlandi and Lopez based on his last 2 - 3 performances - if they all played, pretty attractive for BHA fans and frightening options for the opponents

Very few on here have kicked off against Vicente as much as I have in the past. We the experts, and of course we are experts, we all know that when a guy gets injured he misses a few games and then comes back.
When the return does not happen, as quickly as we think it should, well then our superior brains get to work.

I KNEW, he didn't want to play. I KNEW, that he was angry at Brighton activating on his contract clause. I KNEW that he was in Spain getting some sun on his back. I KNEW, that we should cut him loose, get rid of the dead wood. I knew so much I am surprised my head didn't hurt, and then I started to really think about it.

Once I started to engauge my brain, before I let my fingers near my keyboard, I realised I was being dumb.

Today with brain safely in gear I look forward to his return and I can't wait to see what he brings to our team.

Suarez good and will agree when he has done it over 10 yrs.

I truly believe if Vicente is able to stay fully fit and Gus uses Hoskins more and even plays Buckley up the middle we can be a terrific side.

I think Vicente will link well. With his compatriots as he might find he's more in tune with Orlandi's thinking.

For me one of the most encouraging changes recently is Gus' change of attitude. To hear him saying 'YES we can at LEAST make the playoffs' sounds so much better than 'this team is not good enough for The Premier League' and I'm sure we'll see his change of attitude reflected back to him by the players.

That's what all our genuine supporters want isn't it? It really feels as though there's been a positive shift and I'm looking forward to Saturday and hopefully back to a near full house.

Alfie I guess you would agree that if he takes to the field on saturday it is very unlikely that he will do 45 minutes and no chance of 90, that said now he will and make me look a bigger fool than I am.

It is my hope that he comes on when we have the game won or we are at least are winning. By the time we play our next FA Cup match he should be ready to start and finish a game, or nearly finish.

Like Lua Lua has been a very good impact sub, maybe when Vicente is fully fit he will be an impact starter, and there lies his future. With his talent he might well play a part in getting us one goal up where as Kzenga normaly finds him self fighting for a draw or trying to end a stalemate.

Strange philosophy.

Yes probably the last 20 minutes or so, he is a very different impact player to Kaz. As Baldseagul says with the ball at his feet he is poetry in motion, great balance and ball retention, and his ability to play the reverse pass is too good for most and that includes our players.

Gosh, over the period I've been following this blog, I think no issue has caused as much division (apart from the stupid trolls etc) as that of Vicentes injuries. Mostly, it's clear that this is because of the frustration of having such a gifted player missing for most of the period he's been with us. I'm not one of those who's ever thought he's been pulling a fast one in order to get away, or even that he doesn't want to play for us. If he's that unhappy, and the problems that itself would cause in the dressing room etc, then I think Gus would have got rid. Gus isn't stupid and I believe him to be an honourable man who would not want to keep an unhappy player for whom he obviously has so much respect.I hope Vicente is close to a level of fitness which enables him to play an active part in our push to the playoffs, though I doubt he'll ever get fully fit at this stage of his career. However, as others have said, the thought of his appearing alongside the other technically gifted and exciting players we have at the club is truly mouth watering.Bring it on.
