Referee Craig Pawson's appointment for Sunday's derby against Crystal Palace has been branded "embarrassing" by Albion manager Gus Poyet.

The Argus revealed earlier this week the controversial choice of Premier League newcomer Pawson.

He sent off Seagulls pair Ashley Barnes and Romain Vincelot early on against Burnley at The Amex last season and also dismissed Palace chief Ian Holloway when he was in charge of Blackpool.

Poyet said: "If it's not looked at it's embarrassing. If they think it's the right person to put in this kind of game it's up to them. For me it's still embarrassing.

"And if I was a director or the owner of this football club I would be very disappointed with them. I was expecting the biggest Premier League manager (referee) available to come to this game."
