Albion could make further loan signings during the last fortnight of the transfer window.

The Seagulls have just added left-back Stephen Ward to their squad on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

They borrowed Ward’s former Republic of Ireland team-mate Keith Andrews from Bolton Wanderers on the same basis last week.

More temporary deals are possible before the window shuts on September 2 as head coach Oscar Garcia works to a budget which takes account of Financial Fair Play regulations.

Oscar told The Argus: “We are looking to sign more players before the end of the transfer window, because we had to replace six or seven that left from last season.

“We have to think about the budget and other things. We are trying to have players on loan because it’s cheaper.”

The capture of Ward, 27, has ended Albion’s hunt for a senior replacement for Wayne Bridge following his move to Reading in June.

Oscar said: “It’s a position where we haven’t had many players and, of course, Wayne did a fantastic job last season. He was one of the most important players and we had to cover this position.

“Stephen can help us a lot. He can also play as a winger. We are happy he has joined and he is fit enough to play.”

Ward is expected to replace Latvian youngster Vitalijs Maksimenko against Birmingham City at St Andrews today.

Andrews is also likely to make his full debut in the defensive midfield role normally occupied by Liam Bridcutt (hernia).

Andrea Orlandi (knee) remains on Albion’s lengthy casualty list and Adam Chicksen (ankle) has only just resumed full training.

Ward joins a back four marshalled by Gordon Greer, who the club confirmed yesterday has now signed a new contract until the end of next season following persistent interest from Leeds United.

Oscar said: “One of my targets when I arrived here was to keep Gordon here because he is the captain and he’s a leader. He is very important for me this season.”
