IT'S the weekend when every restaurant is fully booked, when service stations are cleaned out of flowers, and when the queues at card-shops stretch out into the street.

Mother's Day is one of the main gift-buying sprees of the year, and for a few very good reasons.

If you feel you've been neglecting your mum of late, a bunch of tulips or roses, a box of chocolates and a nice card will go a long way towards salving your conscience.

Favourite gift ideas this year, aside from the ones already mentioned, include The Queen DVD - featuring Helen Mirren's Oscar-winning turn - bestselling books by authors such as Josephine Cox and Jackie Collins, year-long magazine subscriptions and perfumes.

Many Glasgow restaurants are gearing up for one of their busiest Sundays of the year, offering all sorts of special menus. One establishment is offering a special B&B package for two people, complete with champagne, chocolate and flowers in the room.

Other families will be treating mum to a day out at the pictures.

Or why not place a special message in the Evening Times to make your mum's day.

Mother's Day cards will sell by the million. Mobile phone texts will zip back and forth like nobody's business: last March saw a record 3.19 billion texts being sent, a figure partly explained by Mother's Day.

Last year, we lavished £1.4bn on presents and cards for Mother's Day. Expect that sum to increase this year.
