A CLYDE passenger ferry which was threatened with being blown up by a US Navy ship last year is being withdrawn from service.

The MV Kenilworth was caught up in an amazing confrontation with the warship during the international exercise, Operation Neptune Warrior.

During the 12-minute crossing between Gourock and Kilcreggan, the skipper of the tiny vessel was warned that, if he did not identify himself, his boat would be fired on.

The warning came last October as the US vessel was leaving the Faslane Naval Base.

It was mistakenly broadcast on VHF Channel 16, the international calling and distress frequency, instead of on an exercise frequency.

The skipper received a radio call warning "unidentified vessel approaching on my starboard side, please identify yourself. If you fail to do so, we will open fire on you with live ammunition". He radioed back saying he was "just a little ferry".

All passengers who travel on the vessel tomorrow will receive a free commemorative booklet detailing the history of the route and the ferry.
