ALBION have been urged to go on the attack in the quest for Championship success – by arguably the club’s best-ever defender.

Chris Hughton and his recruitment team are pursuing transfer targets in various positions as they look to bounce back from last season’s 20th-place finish.

But Seagulls legend and now BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson reckons caution need not be the watchword in the race for a play-off place – or better.

Lawrenson told The Argus: “The three top-scoring teams in the Championship last season were the three who ended up winning promotion. That tells you something.

“For so long in the season other teams like Middlesbrough and Derby looked like they would make it.

“It is so important to have a couple of players to get plenty of goals and maybe something more coming from midfield.

“That gives you a real chance.

“The Championship is the biggest league I know for surprise results. It’s mad. As a division it’s much of a muchness. There’s not a great deal between the teams which makes that goalscorer a massive key to success.

“I wouldn’t worry about losing a few games along the way, to be honest. You can live with that in a division like the Championship.”

Albion had the joint sixth best defensive record in the division last season but ranked 20th for goals scored. Only three teams had fewer wins than the Seagulls.

Many fans are excited over unconfirmed suggestions that Bobby Zamora is interesting the Seagulls.

Zamora was recently released by relegated QPR and is likely to have several suitors.

Albion skipper Gordon Greer was an unused substitute as Scotland boosted their Euro 2016 hopes with a 1-1 draw away to Republic of Ireland on Saturday.
