Kazenga LuaLua was Albion's match winner again as they made cup progress.
But a much-changed Seagulls side did not really impress in their 1-0 win at Southend.
The Championship outfit flirted with early elimination from the Capital One Cup.
But LuaLua latched on to a precise Danny Holla pass in the third minute of added time to coolly slide home the winner .
Tomer Hemed, on as sub, started the move with a touch of quality.
Another summer signing also played a key role in the win.
Niki Maenpaa struggled at times on crosses but he made two good saves late on.
The second, on 86 minutes, was the best as he leapt high to his left to turn Anthony Wordsworth's volley away from the top corner.
Southend, who improved in the second half, would have arguably deserved to sneak through.
But LuaLua was always a threat and, for the second game in a row, proved decisive.
