Albion's latest signing Jamie Murphy will use the agony of missing out on the Championship at Sheffield United to inspire him with the Seagulls.

The Scottish winger became the club's seventh first team capture of the summer yesterday for a fee in the region of £1.5 million.

Murphy, 25, has revealed it was an easy decision to swap another season in League One with the Blades for second tier football with Albion after United's extraordinary exit against Swindon in the play-off semi-finals last season 7-6 on aggregate.

He said: "I'm still not quite fully over it I don't think. I thought we were at least good enough to get to the final. It's still disappointing but you've got to move on.

"You use all your disappointments to try to push you further in your career. Hopefully things can go my way and go the team's way.

"I enjoyed my time at Sheffield. It was great for me and my family but moving to Brighton, having a look at the facilities, it was an easy decision.

"Hopefully we can push higher here and try to get into the play-offs."

Murphy, signed too late to feature at Fulham today, will watch his new team-mates at Craven Cottage ahead of a probable debut at Huddersfield on Tuesday.

He has been on Albion's radar for months in their quest to fill on a permanent basis the vacancy created by Will Buckley's departure to Sunderland a year ago.

The search also included strong interest in Iranian international Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Blackburn's Ben Marshall.

Boss Chris Hughton said: "He (Murphy) is somebody we monitored very closely last season and he was one of Sheffield United's most influential and creative players.

"He's a winger who can play on either flank and he will give us extra options in both wide positions. He's a very good age, an age where he can continue to develop as a player and build on his experience."

Murphy contributed 21 goals and provided 22 assists in 122 games for United after joining them in January 2013 from Motherwell, where he played under ex-Albion manager Marks McGhee.

The Glaswegian former Scotland under-21 wants to exploit his move South to enhance his senior international ambitions, with McGhee now assistant to senior boss Gordon Strachan and still living in Brighton.

Murphy said: "He was the first one that gave me a real chance in the first team, a run of games, playing games in Europe. He was big for me at the time.

"If you play well enough it's always going to get talked about, so it's up to me.

"It's one of the big reasons I felt like making the move was a good thing. I want to try to get in my national team, I want to give everything I've got to try and do that."

Murphy's move follows hot on the heels of Albion's swoop for German centre-half Uwe Huenemeier from Paderborn for a fee of around £1.4 million.

They join fellow newcomers Niki Maenpaa, Gaetan Bong, Liam Rosenior, Tomer Hemed and the re-signed Bobby Zamora in Hughton's drastically revamped squad.
