Albion cleaners and the rest of the non-playing staff are on promotion bonuses.

The “significant incentives” could help pay for cars, deposits on houses or a holiday if the Seagulls clinch a place in the Premier League.

The unusual bonus scheme, linked to the team’s performance, is the result of an in-depth review by chairman Tony Bloom and chief executive Paul Barber into what went wrong last season when the Seagulls were nearly relegated.

Barber revealed to The Argus: “This year for the first time we have incentivised everyone financially so every member of our staff will get a bonus if we are promoted.

“There is a real sense that the whole club is pulling in the same direction for Chris Hughton and the players.

“It just means that even people who are part of our matchday cleaning staff, people who look after the ground, secretaries at the training ground, they have all got a financial interest in us being promoted.

“Therefore they all want to know what they can do to make it happen.

“The value of that could be the difference for someone to have a new car, a deposit on a house or, at the lower end, maybe a great holiday they have never been able to afford.

“These are significant incentives, they are not token gestures.”

Albion will go level on points with Hull at the top of the Championship tomorrow if they win at Cardiff (12.30).
