Connor Goldson has been ruled out for the season after routine screening revealed a possible heart issue.
The defender will undergo preventive surgery with a view to returning to action next term.
Boss Chris Hughton has wished Goldson well and backed the club’s decision to book him in for surgery.
Goldson was identified as having a possible cardiac risk factor after routine medical screening protocols by the club.
Albion sought expert medical advice and it was decided Goldson should undergo preventative surgery.
Hughton said: "This is a significant blow for Connor, and also the club, but having taken further medical advice, the best course of action is for him to have preventative surgery.
"We will be without Connor for the rest of the season, which is a big loss for us - but this is absolutely the right course of action. We wish him well with his recovery and look forward to him returning for us next season."
Uwe Huenemeier looks a certain starter alongside Shane Duffy at Brentford tomorrow with Lewis Dunk serving a one-match ban.
