Mathew Ryan has shrugged off a shaky start to his Albion career as he bids for a second away clean sheet in succession at Bournemouth tonight.

The £5.2 million summer buy from Valencia made two key saves in last Saturday’s win over West Brom after a shut-out at Watford.

Ryan has put behind him criticism of his early performances.

The Australian international let a long-range effort slip through his hands in the final pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid, saw team-mate Lewis Dunk head past him against Manchester City and could not hold a Riyad Mahrez shot when Leicester took an early lead in Albion’s opening two Premier League defeats.

In-form Ryan told The Argus: “I always try to pay attention to the opinions of those closest to me and the coaching staff.

“I want to do my best to please them, but if you start paying attention to that sort of stuff it can really affect you.

“In the lead-up I thought I had been a little bit unlucky. It was obviously a mistake in the Atletico game. I was caught a bit by surprise against Man City for the second goal. Dunky headed it at me. I just relaxed thinking he was going to head it clear.

“The Leicester goal at the beginning, not many people saw it went through Dunky’s legs right in front of me, so I didn’t see it until the last second.

“Do you want to hold it or push it away? It’s not always easy to see the situation from my perspective when people are watching from the stands or on TV.

“Everyone wants the same thing, success for the club. I’ll try my best for them. When it doesn’t go so well it teaches you to enjoy days like that (West Brom) more. Hopefully I can repeat this feeling.”

Ryan is eager to help Albion maintain the upturn in results at Bournemouth.

“Momentum is key in any form of sport,” he said. “If you can string victories together. We haven’t been outplayed by the opposition, it’s just details and moments in games.

“At this level you get punished by things you don’t even quite think are a mistake. You’ve got to raise your game individually and as a team to just be across every little aspect to succeed.”
