Albion have made a move for Sunderland midfielder Paddy McNair.
The Seagulls are expected to pursue their interest in the 23-year-old Northern Ireland international after having an initial bid turned down by the relegated Black Cats.
Their opening offer, according to sources in the north-east, was around £2 million.
The versatile McNair, who can also play at centre-back, has Premier League experience with Manchester United. He made 24 appearances four years ago and scored five goals in 18 outings for Sunderland in the Championship this season.
Midfield strengthening is a summer priority for Albion boss Chris Hughton.
The Seagulls have already added Nigerian international defender Leon Balogun and Romanina international striker Florin Andone to the squad since the transfer window opened on May 17.
They are also interested in Reading defender Liam Moore but have yet to make an offer.
