GUS POYET has urged Albion fans to cool any top-six ambitions – at least until he gets some more players in.

Poyet is continuing his quest for more talent with bustling young Dutch striker Roland Bergkamp the latest to be linked with the club.

Bergkamp, the 20-year-old distant nephew of former Arsenal star Dennis, is interesting the Seagulls but a source close to the player last night described reports that he is about to sign as premature.

Having turned down a new deal at top-flight strugglers Excelsior, Bergkamp has been advised to take his chance in the Championship if an offer comes along.

Excelsior boss John Lammers, a former Breda and Toulon striker, has urged him to look to England rather than any of the first or second division Dutch clubs chasing him.

Poyet offered no comment on Berkgamp, other than to say he had not trained with the League One champions, though the hiring of young striker untried in England is not likely to feature among his top priorities.

Poyet admits he is some way from having a clear idea of what Albion can achieve in a powerful division.

Poyet, whose targets include Newcastle winger Kazenga LuaLua and Ipswich midfielder Owen Garvan, said: “Let me get my whole group together and I will let you know how well I think we will do.

“We have lost ten or 11 players and we have so far gained two.

“People think it will be easy but there are six or seven teams who will spend massive money.

“Why should we be up there?

“Last year we were about the sixth budget and we came first “This year we are the 12th or 14th budget so we look to be maybe 12th or eighth.

“I’m not going to say we are going to be in the top six.”
