ALBION’S players are poised to put pressure on the PFA to challenge the sub snub for the Championship.

Midfielder Matt Sparrow and his team-mates are fuming over the Football League's decision to reduce the number of substitutes from seven to five.

They will ask players’ union rep Tommy Elphick to pursue the matter on their return from Portugal.

Sparrow told The Argus: “I just don’t understand it. Maybe it’s okay for the lower leagues but why can’t you use a couple of kids to make up the bench? I think it’s an abysmal decision.

“I am sure it’s not just us that is angered by it. I can’t imagine what the big boys are thinking like West Ham, Leicester and Birmingham.

“We just need to try and stick together and maybe go on strike or I am not sure what we can do. The Premiership’s got seven subs, so why not the Championship?

“Tommy Elphick is our rep so as soon as we get back home to England we need to get Tommy to get on the case and try to push it forward.”

Boss Gus Poyet has already revealed his disgust at the decision taken at a League EGM last week.

Sparrow added: “It’s infuriated us really. We are not happy one bit but there’s not a lot we can do unless we try to go to the PFA and see if they can sort something out before the Doncaster game but I can’t see them changing their minds at all.

“There will be a lot of disappointed players, especially at away games if you are left out.”

Tickets go on sale from 10am today for Albion’s first Championship game at The Amex against Doncaster on August 6.

Fran Sandaza, Albion's former Spanish striker, has completed a move back to Scotland with St Johnstone on a one-year contract.
