Albion boss Gus Poyet is still targeting an established Championship performer to bolster his strike force.

But he is not worried about his front men being under-prepared by a disrupted pre-season.

New signings Craig Mackail-Smith and Will Hoskins and new dad Ashley Barnes have not had much playing time together so far during the programme of friendlies.

A combination of knocks, illness and paternity leave has limited their opportunities to forge a partnership.

Poyet has confidence in them but would still like to add to a strike force which also includes Dutch rookie Roland Bergkamp before the opening Championship fixture against Doncaster at The Amex a week tomorrow.

He told The Argus: “I am convinced that the way we play that sooner or later the strikers are going to have chances to score goals.

“Maybe one day they are going to have two or three in the first 20 minutes or they are going to have to wait until 60 minutes to have two or three. It doesn’t matter, what I have to make sure is they get those chances and then they have got the quality to finish.

“I am not bothered about, just the option we are always talking about, getting an experienced, Championship, big player in there that for different reasons we didn’t get.

“There are not many and everybody wants the same so it’s not easy. At the moment we need to go as we are but I haven’t given up on that at all, so we'll see.”
