New dad Ashley Barnes could start for Albion against Doncaster on Saturday after a goalscoring return to action against Spurs.

Barnes missed the Seagulls’ three-match tour of Portugal as his partner was about to give birth.

He deputised for the injured Will Hoskins against Tottenham and celebrated by converting a cross from strike partner Craig Mackail-Smith, the first goal for Albion’s first team at The Amex.

Manager Gus Poyet said: “He got the opportunity to play because of Will’s situation and he took it so he’s got a real chance to start.”

Albion are waiting on the results of a scan on the hip injury which ruled out Hoskins, signed earlier in the summer from Bristol Rovers.

Poyet said: "He had a kind of pain in the top of the hip on Thursday and we didn’t risk him.

“The scan result is going to be on Monday morning and we hope we can train with him on Tuesday.”

Alan Navarro, an unused substitute against Spurs, and his representative are trying to thrash out a deal with the club to stay.

The defensive midfielder was invited back to train with Albion by Poyet after missing most of last season with a ruptured cruciate knee ligament.

Poyet said: “We are talking to him and his agent and we will see if we can do something for him to stay.

“There is nothing on the table but we will sit down and have a chat. You know me, I don’t do short deals. It will have to be at least a year for sure.”
