Gus Poyet insisted Albion deserved to begin life in the Championship with a win.
The Albion boss praised Doncaster for their part in a great afternoon but believes his side's positive approach was the key to a 2-1 victory.
Will Buckley scored the winner in the eighth minute of stoppage time, his second of the game, but Albion created a number of chances in a rousing finish.
Poyet said: "Up to 60-65 minutes, it was difficult but the last 20 minutes we run over Doncaster and there was only one team having chances, creating opportunities, pushing and really putting the opposition under pressure.
"I believe that was down to the winning mentality we created last year, our fitness, a little bit of everything and in the end, overall, we probably deserved it."
Poyet added: "It was a great show, I would say entertainment. When you buy a ticket you need to see something that when you go home you are happy about.
"To show the kind of football today and entertainment you need two teams and I have to say Doncaster did their bit for a great afternoon."
An angry Poyet was sent to the stands in the first half after Kazenga LuaLua was booked for diving.
After the game he did not want to talk about referee Eddie Ilderton but said of his dismissal: "That is me, I will not change."
