Albion boss Gus Poyet has admitted there are no excuses for throwing away victory against Leeds.

The Seagulls came from 2-0 down at half-time to lead 3-2 at The Amex last night before conceding an injury-time equaliser.

Poyet blamed poor defending, rather than Wednesday’s exertions against Liverpool in the Carling Cup, for Ross McCormack pinching a point for the visitors with his second goal of the game.

The Uruguayan told The Argus: “Credit to the players for changing the first half into a great performance in the second half. Then things we normally do right we didn’t do at the end.

“If you don’t know where the ball is going or when it is something spectacular fair enough but when the keeper is kicking it forward 70 yards you know where the ball is going. It’s the easiest action in football to defend. We didn’t.

“There are no excuses, that is the best part. You cannot make the effort that we made in the second half after playing on Wednesday and then go and say maybe you were carrying it in the 92nd minute. That would be a cheap excuse.

“I think we won a point because we defended very badly in specific situations and we were out of the game. On another day you don’t score and it finishes 2-0 or 3-0. It was a great comeback, a dream comeback probably. Unfortunately, we conceded another goal.”
