Gus Poyet is making no promises about delivering the Premier League to Albion.
His aim is to establish the Seagulls as a top Championship club, regularly in the hunt for promotion.
Poyet has just signed a new five-year contract as manager through to June 2016.
Asked where he expects Albion to be by then, the Uruguayan told The Argus: “I think we should be in a better position than today.
“That is top five in the Championship every year, or in the Premiership would be even better.
“I want us to be a real contender from the beginning of the season, which means like a West Ham or Leicester this year, then it depends who you compete with.
“It's not only about you, it’s about the others as well. You can have a terrific year and go up and in another year it is not enough to go up.”
