Albion striker Craig Mackail-Smith’s hopes of making it to Euro 2012 are over.
Mackail-Smith shook off a back injury to play the whole 90 minutes in Scotland’s final qualifying game against world and European champions Spain in Alicante.
The Seagulls star won a second half penalty which David Goodwillie converted but it was only a consolation as Scotland went down 3-1 after being on the receiving end of another footballing masterclass from the majestic Spaniards.
Combined with the Czech Republic’s 4-1 win against Lithuania it meant that Craig Levein’s men missed out on securing runners-up spot in Group I and a place in the play-offs.
