Inigo Calderon is on FA Cup standby for Albion following the sale of Steve Cook to Bournemouth.

Cook has completed a permanent switch to the League One club after the Seagulls recalled him from his loan spell to make his full league debut in Monday’s 3-0 home victory over Southampton.

The Argus understands the £170,000 fee for the 20-year-old could rise to about £300,000 based on appearances and other add-ons.

Cook’s departure leaves Adam El-Abd, Romain Vincelot and Grant Hall as the only fully fit defenders for Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Wrexham at The Amex.

Boss Gus Poyet may not need to make a signing, with Calderon ahead of schedule in his comeback from keyhole knee surgery.

The Spanish right-back was not expected to resume training until around the same time as Albion return to Championship action against Bristol City on Saturday week but he has an outside chance of facing Wrexham.

Poyet revealed: “Signing a defender is an option. We will see what is available and what is the best option. Calde has a chance but it’s whether we want to risk him. We’ll see how he goes this week.”
