Navarro's Albion future back in limbo

Alan Navarro's Albion deal is about to end Alan Navarro's Albion deal is about to end

Alan Navarro is in limbo again over his Albion future.

Manager Gus Poyet is holding meetings this week with every permanent member of the first team squad.

Most are still under contract but Navarro’s one-year deal is about to end.

No announcement has been made by the club but the midfielder tweeted yesterday: “So it’s another summer of uncertainty. Hate this time of year.”

Navarro was released last summer. He was invited back for pre-season training to prove his fitness and form after recovering from a serious knee injury and earned a 12-month contract.

The Liverpudlian, 31 at the end of the month, started half of Albion’s Championship fixtures this season.

Some players under contract will be told by Poyet they are no longer part of his plans, although they have yet to be identified.

Meanwhile, loan signings Joe Mattock and Gonzalo Jara Reyes are also in limbo now that Roy Hodgson is leaving their parent club West Brom to become England coach.

The fullbacks linked up with the Seagulls at the end of January for the rest of the season, in Jara Reyes’ case for the second time.

The Chilean international featured regularly when Hodgson first took charge at The Hawthorns but has made only seven appearances for West Brom this term.

Mattock was on loan at Sheffield United when Hodgson succeeded Roberto Di Matteo in the West Midlands.

He has also been on loan to Portsmouth this season and played just three times under Hodgson.

Wolves target man Sam Vokes and Manchester City prospect Gai Assulin have returned to their clubs as well following loan stints with Albion.

Poyet said: “We have told every player on loan the same. We thanked them for what they did and they have got a great advantage, because we know them now.

“It is always an option but it is early doors. We’ll see what happens. We cannot go for anyone yet.”

sadly Gus will need to let good players like Nav go. The centre of mid has not been right all season, I would imagine lack of goals is down to Nav and Bridcutt teaming up together, great in defence.. but lack attacking ability, Vincelot to millwall is on the cards.. two keepers have been told to find another club! not sure which two, but a clear out has begun.

I like the way Nav plays, but he's a little off the pace at this level and he's not getting any younger. Mattock would be a very good acquisition if we can get him. I'm still undecided on Reyes, when he plays in the middle, his passing goes to pieces, but he does play well on the flank. I'd like to hold onto Vincelot, he is a decent ball player.

Get rid now! Poyet doesn't rate him at all so just put him out of his missery. Another rubbish player Brighton could do without.

If you replace the word good with rubbish I would agree with you.

Ignoring the idiotic comment above, midfield is one of the key areas to upgrade. Navarro had a good season last year but is not likely to improve any more and will always be a one goal a season man at best. Will do a job for a lower Championship or leading Div One. Really need a Danny Wilson or Brian Horton type midfield player (apologies for going back so far!) who has drive and leadership and will score 7 - 10 goals a season. Ability to take free kicks and corners would also be helpful especially if Vicente doesn't come back. Need to clear out a few players (hopefully for a fee) as squad is too big - will hopefully free up money for higher class players to take us to the next level.

The easy part is letting players like Navs go; the harder part is finding better quality replacements. If Vicente leaves, the cupboard will be practically bare as IMHO, the only two worth keeping are Bridcutt and JFC. I don't know what we're going to do with Harley though as he still has two years to go on his contract. Will someone be willing to stump up 250k for him?

Raul is available on a free, 34 yes, but still a class act and would be another player on the same wave length as Vicente. Kevin Phillips was still smashing them in at 39!

I have a question for you Zamora25, how do you suppose Gus 'keeps' Vokes, Reyes and Mattock when they are not his players.

Tell me more about this 'Navrro' fella.

Looks like you might be on cloud cukoo land yourself.

There are a number of players who have given the Club 100%, but with no disrespect intended, will not take us any further. It's all about ambition, and if the players concerned, (and I think many of us are in general agreement), are still in the line-up for the first game of next season, I can accept that, but the aspirations appear to be for a higher level, and if that is the case, replacing players is the nature of the business.
If there is a 'clear-out', I don't envisage any of the players involved having difficulty finding a club, as they are all first-rate professionals.

Btw, the matchday routine you posted last Wednesday didn't go unappreciated :-)

I so want Nooney to create something special with his final ball, but too many promising moves have broken down because of poor delivery.
I'm sure it's as frustrating for him, but the honeymoon seems to be over.
Still wouldn't like to see him go, but no longer first choice for me unless he can add that vital component to his game.

Sometimes (often not also as football shouldn't be too much about this of course!!) it's worth an objective, non emotional, non subjective look at some stats and figures, whether it be how many points have we averaged when Navarro has started a match; Brez - compared to when not (some may remember stats around Paul "Tank" Clark in the eighties; Vicente (odd as it may seem) - how many goals has CMS scored since December - how many chances has he actually had; how much 9and why) do our players slip far more than that of the opponents on our pitch; goals from silly free kicks, shots saved cleanly from outside the area by Ankergren and so on - I guess this all gets looked at and considered somewhere in the mix - if not, it should as it helps make better decisions. Mattock clearly must be a target to remain in the same way that Reyes is clearly a "no" even if it's just down to apparent attitude

I'm glad you think it's possible that Gus and Tanno do a bit of match / performance analysis. I was beginning to think by the way you started that post that you reckon they just stick a wet finger in the air and see which way the wind is blowing! :-)

Just needs a little more composure, but I think the way the Amex reacts when he has the ball has something to do with that and he gets caught up in the moment, rather than seeing what is best on.

He will be alright with more experience.

Yup. Agree entirely.

Think we should be ruthless and cut loose the following:

Anks, Poke, Painter, Sparrow, Navs, (possibly) Dicker, Hoskins (if he's not in Gus' plans) and any others not shaping up in the development squad.

Sign Mattock on a permanent and Assulin on a season-long loan if poss', release the rest back to their clubs.

We need a new first choice GK + one (if Gonzalez is no cigar).

We also need two LBs: Mattock + one.

Central midfield is where we need an overhaul....Barry Robson? Boyd? Scott Allan? Nick Powell? Jacob Butterfield?

Strikers to come: one sizeable CF and another flair striker e.g Simon Cox, Jordan Rhodes.

Love It!!!
One of the great seasons is not over more than seven days and half the team that put us in the top ten are on there way out the door according to many above.
Gus and only Gus will decide who will go who will stay and who will get an invite to join an up and coming Championship league club destined for the Premiere league.
I think he (Gus) will have better success on attracting the players he wants this time round after the performance of the club this season and of course the Amex must capture the attention of players. Also wonder if he will delve into the foreign market again?.
