Albion's new boy has been warned he faces a battle for the right-back spot.

Bruno officially becomes a Seagulls player this weekend when his current deal with Valencia expires.

The 31-year-old from Barcelona has played right-back in the Spanish first division, Champions League and Europa League.

But boss Gus Poyet expects Inigo Calderon to give him stern competition for a starting place.

Calderon kept Chile international Gonzalo Jara Reyes out of the side towards the end of last season and offers an attacking threat from deep.

Poyet said: “Bruno and Calde are different types of player and I have to give Calde the credit he deserves.

“No one has to think because Bruno is coming Calderon is finished. No chance!

“It was the same situation last year when Gonzalo Jara was here.

“Then Gonzalo was sent off at Blackpool and Calde jumped into the team and played the rest of the season because he was outstanding.

“It is good for us. It is competition, it is maintaining the level of the players at their highest.”

Calderon is a popular club man and has played a key off-field role in helping Spanish-speaking players such as Vicente and Agustin Battipiedi settle in during recent seasons.

Poyet added: “I think Bruno will make Calde better and I’m sure Calde will help Bruno to adapt.

“Who knows? Maybe they will play together. Calde can play centre-half, we played him at left-back a couple of times.

“It will depend how the players are performing. I can tell you if they are the two best players at the club they will both play.”

Poyet admits a left-back to compete with Marcos Painter is among his top priorities.

He has been linked with a move for Arsenal’s Ignasi Miquel, a Spanish youth international.

However Poyet is believed to regard Miquel as a centre-back who can play on the left rather than a specialist left-back
